We will provide 150 adult walkers with reflective safety vests. We will give every child enrolled in our schools a clip on LED safety light.
We will also run an information campaign through the schools, gatherings, Facebook and local public announcements to help raise awareness of the need to be visible when walking. The key goals will be normalizing the wearing of visibility vests and have every person who goes out in the dark wearing a vest or LED light.
Over the past few years, the Wrinch Memorial Foundation has worked to encouraging people to add more activity to their lives. Many people choose to be more active by walking. Last winter we were able to equip many people with safety devices for their shoes to help them walk in ice. Now we are concerned that people walking at night have low visibility. For people who work during the day there is no option but to walk in the dark. We know that we can keep walkers, both adults and children safer by helping them to be more visible in the dark. We also suspect that wearing visibility vests does not seem like a natural and normal thing for people to do. We would like to have everyone going out at night reaching for their visibility vest before they leave the house. We plan to measure the effectiveness of this project by compiling comments and stories from the people that we give the vests and devices to.
