Village on the Move Safe Travel Project

Summary

This multi-dimensional project led by the Cumberland Community School Parent Advisory Council involves improving safety for school-aged children at the Cumberland Community School in the Village of Cumberland. The project will install a speed activated radar warning strobe lights in addition to signage and fencing that will direct vulnerable road users to cross safely at the designated crosswalk.

Project Overview

The project involves the implementation of safety improvements along Egremont Road in Cumberland which borders the Cumberland Community School. The population of the Village of Cumberland has grown significantly and quickly with the most recent census data showing a 30 percent growth rate between 2011 and 2016.

Cumberland also has a relatively low median age of 39.3 years and, as such, many residents have school-aged children. Egremont Road is a common point of entry and exit for vehicle commuters and is a main drop-off/pick-up area for school-aged children. There is also congestion at this location and, more importantly, vehicle speeds that are often higher than the posted 30 km/h speed limit.

The project responds to these issues by installing speed-feedback radar warning strobe lights at the north and south entrance of the school zone where speeding is most common and where the highest number of resident complaints originate. A second way that the project responds to the above-noted challenges is by installing signage and fencing to better direct school-aged children, and vulnerable road users in general, to a safe and designated crossing place.
