Our speedwatch program will provide visible speed awareness to motor vehicles with the intention of slowing traffic through our reserve to protect pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists through a fixed speed reader board and a mobile speed reader board with volunteer traffic and speed counters
The communities highest priority safety issue for our enhanced police service is road safety and speeders. It is also identified as a priority in our comprehensive community plan. Over the past several decades we have had 2 pedestrians killed on one stretch of road (the speed limit is less on reserve than other parts of the road). As residents along the busy Dollarton Highway (not an actual highway) are challenged to cross their street to access community resources, visible presence of speed watchers as well as mounted speeder boards can improve safety for crosswalk users. Additionally we have a new outdoor school, bringing over 75 students into our community to attend school. The school speed zone is not always followed and a visible sign will help bring awareness to drivers of their speed. We will always seek enforcement efforts but police can only attend so often, so this provides us a direct opportunity to increase awareness.
One electronic speed board will be mounted in a fixed location, moved on a quarterly basis, to show motorists their speed with a goal of them slowing down. Board includes a flashing strobe to capture their attention. Second board will be mobile and part of the speed watch program which enlists trained volunteers to set up the board at a safe location along a shoulder or sidewalk to display speeds to oncoming motorists. Volunteers track number of vehicles and the speed they were going. Data is kept in a spreadsheet. Often our police partners will set up nearby to conduct enforcement efforts. Any vehicle travelling 20 over or more will have their plate number sent to police for possible warning letter, per standard speed watch program. Programs like this are run by local police in partnership with ICBC and police volunteers. This program will increase our internal capacity to meet our own safety needs.
