Phase I of our Tsideldel-Safe Crossing Project is making good progress towards solution finding with respect to the road safety issues. Stakeholders (MOH Injury Prevention, UBC subject matter experts, Ministry of Transportation resources, as well as Tsideldel Leadership and Clinical staff) are meeting regularly and inter agency collaboration is making good progress. Anticipated timelines for in the ground solutions is summer 2023.
At this point additional financial resource goals are twofold; 1. Engage the community Elders, Families and Individuals in the spirit of progress and consultation to ensure this remains a community driven project as well as to acknowledge of lives lost at the intersection of Tsideldel and Highway 20. Additional education and engagement is required to survey and receive feedback from the community with respect to the existing tunnel. 2. Other funds are targeted to subsidize and add value to the (planned) on reserve road upgrades such as signage.
Phase II of the Tsideldel-Safe Crossing Project will build on momentum attained in Phase I. As of January, 2023 the dedicated project resources are committed to mitigating the road safety issues including the potential for research and publication. Phase II will enable the Tsideldel project team to formalize Elder participation to guide community engagement processes, essential to any project success. It is anticipated that Elder guidance will ensure engagement success and maintain a "nothing about us, without us" approach, making this an example of Culturally safe project. As suggested in informal discussions, and as part of the move towards healthier community that is aligned with the Tsideldel Community Health and Wellness 10 year plan, Elder leadership is key. We anticipate developing a community survey related to the existing foot travel tunnel built several years ago as a solution to the road safety issues of the day. This tunnel has not been used and/or maintained for several years. Although solutions are relatively easy to implement, community engagement will ensure the value proposition is realized-or not. The second goal of Phase II will ensure that partial cost coverage for clean up and maintenance of the existing foot travel tunnel as well as contribute to on reserve road approach issues including but not limited to signage, clean up, fencing, cattle guard repair.
