This project will install a combination of speed humps, pavement markings, signage and a raised crosswalk to increase safety for children and their caregivers using active transportation to get to and from school.
The Township of Langley is one of the fastest growing municipalities in BC. This project aims to increase road safety next to a new school in Willoughby, the Township’s fastest growing and most racially diverse neighborhood. Donna Gabriel Robins Elementary is the Township’s newest elementary school, with over 600 enrolled students. It has the largest catchment area of all schools on the Willoughby slope with approximately half of the students travelling from the 72 Avenue and 200 Street area either by school bus or being driven by car (up to 4 km away). Most if not all of the students who live within a few blocks of the school walk.
For this project, multiple speed humps will be installed to serve as a physical reminder to drivers about the special need to slow down in this area. At the same time, pavement markings and additional signage will be installed to increase visibility of the road changes and to alert drivers of the need to drive slowly. Finally, a raised crosswalk with special pavement markings will be replace the current crosswalk across 78 Avenue at 204B Street. The success of this is project will be evaluated post installation through traffic analysis completed by qualified traffic professionals reviewing vehicle operating speeds on the network proximate to the school, continual surveillance of vehicle incident data for marked changes in road safety, and feedback from school members and the wider community.
