This project is designed to increase the safety of our vulnerable road users by installing 4 radar speed signs on routes with high vehicle traffic as well as a high volume of vulnerable road users. In addition to the speed signs, we will be updating and repainting the cross walks so they are visibly brighter to vehicle traffic and vulnerable road users.
Stewart is a small remote community in Northern BC. Due to the small size of our community many of our residents and visitors walk or bike to travel within our community. As we do not have a bus service in Stewart, the majority of the children walk/bike/roll to and from school. Everything in Stewart is within an active transportation distance. Mining and exploration work has increased in Stewart over the last couple of years, which has resulted in an influx of out-of-town workers who are not familiar with our community and may not realize when they are travelling in a high-volume pedestrian/residential area.
Radar speed signs and updating the crosswalks will provide a visual cue to drivers to be aware of their speeds, and raise awareness that they could be sharing the road with vulnerable road users. Our goal is to increase the safety of vulnerable road users in these two areas by slowing down the traffic and/or deterring the traffic to travel on the main highway rather than on the residential streets.
