This project improved safety for vulnerable road users at a busy intersection adjacent to multiple schools and other pedestrian destinations by making implementing Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs), increasing crosswalk crossing signal timing durations, adding "SCHOOL" stencil markings and installing flexible bollards to deter motorists from changing lanes too close to the intersection. Pedestrian countdown timers were also added to the intersections to help pedestrians know how much time they have left to cross at the intersection.
The intersection of Stave Lake Street and 11th Avenue/Prentis Avenue is a key intersection in Mission that serves many different types of road users. Stave Lake Street is a four-lane arterial road, truck route, and transit route. There are multiple schools and educational institutions located adjacent to this intersection. The City had identified multiple concerns with this intersection including 24 motor vehicle collisions (12 casualty crashes, 12 property damage only collisions) in the last 5 years. There have also been a concerning number of reported near-misses involving pedestrians.
The safety improvements implemented at this location include Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs), longer crosswalk signals for pedestrians, installation of flexible bollards along the 11th Avenue and Prentis Avenue to prevent drivers weaving near the intersection, installing an additional “Right Lane Ends” sign on the southbound approach, and adding "SCHOOL" pavement markings on Stave Lake Street and 11th Avenue.
This work helps to protect vulnerable road users (VRUs), improve perceived safety for VRUs, and supports increasing the number of children using active modes to travel to and from school.
