Squamish Nation Road Safety (Speed Watch)

Summary

Squamish Nation's Road Safety Education Program ("Speed Watch") aims to raise awareness among all road users to reduce the number of traffic incidents related to speeding in on-reserve communities on the North Shore and in Squamish Valley and, in turn, to promote safety and well-being of community members on-reserve. Installations of permanent and mobile speed reader boards will be part of this project. The newly created Community Safety Team in the Public Safety Department will lead and manage the speed watch program.

Project Overview

Since its creation in November 2022, the Public Safety Department has received numerous complaints from community members, including elders, families, parents, and daycare and school staff, about speeding and the related safety risks to road users (e.g., pedestrians and cyclists). More specifically, concerns regarding the unsafe traffic environment on Squamish on-reserve communities were shared at the last quarterly People’s Assembly gathering (i.e., town hall) in October. They were also shared during community engagements with Elders and during Public Safety Task Force focus groups in 2023. In all of these conversations, community members have expressed feelings of a lack of personal safety for themselves and their families in the communities where they live. In developing and executing this program, Squamish Nation will pursue collaboration with North Vancouver RCMP, IFNU, and ICBC, as well as with neighboring municipalities and Indigenous communities, as partnerships are important, particularly when it comes to information sharing, capacity building and data collections (e.g., data collection forms and training manuals, etc.).
