Lhtako Dene Bus Stop

Summary

We are looking to provide two platform/covered areas for pedestrians to have a safe place to stand as they wait for the bus.

Project Overview

We currently have 2 unsafe bus stops: Juniper Road, and Lust Road.

Juniper Road stop is located on a frontage road, the bus stop is literally deep in the ditch, forcing mothers and their children to stand on a busy roadway, we have received complaints about children coming close to being hit. Because in the winter our ditches are often full of snow and ice, this forces people to stand on top of snow banks, and slippery ice. Because this bus route has access to necessities such as grocery stores, these stops are often very busy with low income families, special needs adults, and other community members.

Lust Road stop is the main stop for community members living on both the Lhtako Dene reserve as well in the Red Bluff community. The stop is located on a main road, with vehicles often going 70-80km/hr and is located near our Jr. high school. This stop if most often seen with Mothers with strollers, as well as indigenous community members

We feel that the impact a shelter/platform could make in either of these locations would be so significant, and may even help save a life. We have the indigenous community's full support moving forward.
