This project concerns road safety improvements surrounding schools, based on the annual School Safety Assessment Program.
We will implement quick-fix safety improvements including signage upgrades, pavement markings, and sightline improvements during the summer of 2023. We are also exploring options for longer-term improvements such as traffic calming, pedestrian crossing upgrades, and new sidewalk connections.
Timeline:
- Spring 2022: Development of traffic study and implementation plans for the speed reduction initiative
- June 2022: Pre-pilot traffic data collection: Traffic studies showed 85th percentile speeds on most of the streets in the selected area are lower than 40km/h, with average speeds around 30km/h.
- Fall/Winter 2022: Walkthroughs with schools for School Safety Assessment
- January 2023: Compiled a list of school safety improvements based on the School Safety Assessment Program
- June 2023: Report to Council on findings from the traffic studies and pivoting to safety improvements surrounding schools
- Summer 2023: Implementation of quick-fix safety improvements such as signage upgrades, pavement markings, and sightline improvements
