This project will install four flashing LED diagonal pedestrian crossing signs to improve safety where a new accessible year-round active transportation route crosses Chilliwack River Road next to the The'í:tselíya - S.A.Y. Health and Community Centre.
A recent traffic study recorded the speed of vehicles driving along Chilliwack River Road and concluded that 85% of drivers exceed the 50km/h speed limit by more that 15km/h. The study confirmed community concerns that anyone using the road shoulder is at a higher risk for injury. This is of particular concern because of the school bus pick ups and drop offs for grade-school aged children along the road shoulders. In conjunction with the installation of speed notification and slow down signs, the flashing crosswalk signs will remind road users to slow down and be aware of pedestrians using the road or the areas adjacent.
