Saulteau Sliding Hill-Rink

Summary

Our goal is to build a sledding hill and ice rink for children in one safe, secure spot to ensure that families (children, youth, adults, and more) will not be injured on reserve. This project would also eliminate cause of injury to other demographics in relation to the highways and roads in the community as we will take additional initiatives in promoting road safety.

  1. There are hazards with having children sledding by the roads on reserve. Unsafe driving conditions, careless drivers, lack of maintenance for the potential “sledding spots,” and more.
  2. Many families on Saulteau land depend on walking for transportation. Walking alongside the highway is unavoidable to get to the nearby convenience store, clinic, band office, and recreational areas – such as the projected sledding area, etc.
  3. The plan is to make one central location for our project, and we have already designated an area for such.

Project Overview

This project involves construction of a sledding hill and ice rink. It would support the safety of everyone participating on the reserve - particularly children and families. The benefit would extend to those on and off reserve, status and non-status members, etc. The reserve's school and daycare would also benefit greatly. As the school has to meet physical education requirements, the sledding hill and ice rink would prove very useful for the educational operation on reserve, especially since they are planning to extend the school by a couple more grades. This new, optimized safety project would mean that everyone could engage in more recreation in the cold months than they ever could in the past!
