Funding will support the construction of a separated path to facilitate safer active transportation in the Shxw’owhamel community.
This project aims to improve safety for vulnerable road users in Shxw'Ow'Hamel First Nation and encourage walking and rolling to support a healthier and more active community. There is only a single road connecting many of the community residences to the Band Office and the newly constructed community centre, and some members of the community have almost been hit by drivers along this road segment. Community members and parents of children currently don’t feel safe when they are walking or rolling along this unavoidable connecting road.
In addition to providing a central location for cultural activities in the community, the new community centre also houses a health centre and gym. Many community members walk or roll to access the services offered at the community centre and Band Office. Of particular safety concern are the elders, children and youth, and people seeking health care who currently must share the main road with people driving motor vehicles.
To address this problem, Shxw'Ow'Hamel First Nation will be building a simple separated pathway next to the main road, thereby providing a safe space for people to walk, run, skate, or cycle. A local contractor will prepare and lay a gravel pathway next to the main road using material from a local gravel pit. Eventually, pending additional funding, the community would like to have this pathway paved. This project also creates opportunities to have conversations in the community to raise awareness regarding safe vehicle speeds, impaired driving, and giving extra care when driving near vulnerable road users.
