Safety for all on Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) Lands

Summary

This grant will fund the purchase and installation of two speed reader board signs and a speed reader mobile trailer, which will be placed at locations where speed has been identified as a concern.

Project Overview

The Tsawwassen First Nations (TFN) has made significant efforts to balance pedestrian/vehicular traffic, including traffic calming measures; resolve parking concerns; support a transportation network characterized by greater connectivity, reduce environmental impacts, promote development that makes the most efficient use of land, and increase a sense of belonging among the membership. TFN has also been declared as the fastest growing jurisdiction within the Metro Vancouver region in the recent Census reporting. This means that Tsawwassen Lands are a preferred location for new residents with beautiful water views; proximity to recreation and to pursue hobbies like bird watching, hiking, fishing, etc. Due to its excellent connectivity to Highway 17, and strategic location near the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal as well as the Delta Port, many industrial entrepreneurs (e.g. a 450,000 sq ft Amazon warehouse) have chosen TFN resulting in increased vehicular (trucks, buses, cars, etc.) traffic. However, TFN lacks measures to curb this traffic, monitor impacts and ensure safety for all residents and users of the roads. The Nation is lacking some crucial infrastructure to control speed; hence, the need for speed reader boards. The speed reader boards are anticipated to provide enhanced functionality to manage the increasing traffic and provide better safety to the most vulnerable members such as elders and youth. The speed reader boards will be managed and maintained by the nation’s Bylaw Enforcement and Public Works departments. The Delta Police team working on TFN lands will use the data and devices to monitor and include measures within the TFN Community Safety Strategy.
