Rotary Drive Pedestrian Safety Improvement Project

Summary

This project will include the installation of multi-directional Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) that will improve pedestrian and active transportation user safety near a very busy and high-traffic area in Kimberley, BC.

Project Overview

The Kimberley Rotary Drive recreation area is one of the most widely used neighbourhoods in the City. This comprehensive safety enhancement project in will transform the security and well-being of pedestrians and active transportation users in the area. Nearby infrastructure includes the Kimberley Civic Centre Arena, the Kimberley Aquatic Centre, McKim Middle School with playground and field, Rotary Park playground and splash pad, baseball diamond and the entrance to the busy Rails to Trails multi-use pathway.

The focal point of this initiative is the installation of multi-directional Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), aimed at significantly bolstering safety measures for pedestrians and active transport users in a high-traffic area.

The proposed location, nestled near Kimberley's vibrant recreation district, hosts a multitude of vital community amenities. Given the diverse range of activities and amenities, this area experiences heavy foot traffic from pedestrians and active transport users, alongside the constant flow of vehicular traffic.

The RRFBs are poised to be a game-changer in augmenting safety within this dynamic area. Their multi-directional design will ensure maximum visibility, serving as an unmistakable warning for motorists regarding the presence of pedestrians, including children, elderly people and cyclists. This heightened visibility is crucial in reducing the likelihood of accidents and enhancing overall safety conditions for all road users with the beacons alerting drivers to the crossing activities of pedestrians, providing them with the necessary time and awareness to yield appropriately.

The prime focus on safety aligns with the overarching goal of minimizing potential conflicts between different modes of transportation, fostering a secure coexistence between pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The installation of RRFBs not only addresses current safety concerns but also proactively anticipates and mitigates potential risks associated with the high levels of activity in the area.

This project's emphasis on safety improvements goes beyond mere infrastructure enhancement; it's a dedicated effort to create a safe and secure environment for all residents and visitors navigating the vibrant recreation district in Kimberley, BC. The installation of RRFBs stands as a beacon of progress, symbolizing the community's commitment to fostering a safe, accessible, and welcoming public space for everyone.
