Residential Road Safety Project

Summary

This project will install permanent speed reduction bumps and warning signs on two residential streets leading to the community’s primary sports fields in an established neighbourhood. The streets see high-traffic volumes before and after game times, with speeds often in excess of the 30km/hr posted speed limit. Vulnerable road users are currently sharing the road with vehicles, as there are no sidewalks and limited space to construct new sidewalks.

Project Overview

The District of 100 Mile House identified the need for speed reduction bumps and warning signs to be installed on North Birch Avenue and Evergreen Crescent. These streets lead to the community’s primary sports fields that are located within an established neighbourhood. For this reason the streets see high traffic volumes before and after sports programs, often travelling in excess of the posted speed limit of 30 km/h. Vulnerable road users share the road with vehicles as there are no sidewalks in this neighbourhood and limited space to construct new ones. Overall road and pedestrian safety will be improved as a result of this project, and safe pedestrian and recreational opportunities can grow. Providing the speed bumps and warning signs will create safer passage for all street users and area residents, including slowing vehicular traffic down, and support pedestrian confidence to access the sports fields and feel safe doing so during high traffic times.
