The project will provide speed bumps along the 3 largest stretches of road within the 4 Mile reserve lands as well as provide speed signs throughout the entire reserve, both in 4 Mile and downtown Bella Coola. The speed bumps and signs will be in place in an effort to increase pedestrian/children's safety as well as enhance road user knowledge of the safe speeds to be driving when within reserve lands.

The Nuxalk Nation expands over 2 separate reservations, one on the Bella Coola town site and one within 4 mile reservation. The population on the Nuxalk reserve is approximately 1200 members. The reserve lands of the Nuxalk Nation have never had signage or electronic speed radar signs that show the expected speed for drivers.

One of the main reasons why speed signs are needed is the majority of community members, when asked, report that the speed max is 50 kms per hour, when really all reserve lands are 30kms per hour. Within the Nuxalk Nation reserve there is a Daycare Center, Head Start Program, Preschool, Elementary and Middle School, the Nuxalk College, Elders Center, Youth Center and the Nuxalk Hall, all of which have members of all ages frequenting the areas. Our main goal is to keep each person safe. We feel that the signage for speed maximums will bring awareness to drivers on the true speed limits and therefore slowing them down when driving through reserve lands.

Another recent area of concern has been the use of recreational vehicles including ATV's and dirt bikes. With speed bumps being installed on the straight road stretches on reserve lands, we feel this will target those drivers that still choose to speed as well as force recreational vehicles to slow down when using reserve roads to get through to the back dirt roads. We also feel that with speed signs and speed bumps, this will be the least invasive way to encourage all road users to drive at a safe speed, ultimately keeping our entire community, especially our vulnerable elders, children and youth all safe as we access the services within our beautiful territory.
