This project add a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) signal to an existing crosswalk with median divider that serves a nearby elementary school, the Royal Oak Skytrain Station, and helps cyclists using the Victory Street bikeway to cross Nelson Street more safely.
This project will complement a new crosswalk with an existing median divider on Nelson Avenue at Victory Street to add a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB). The RRFB would increase driver awareness of the crossing along Victory Street, and improve access to the Royal Oak Skytrain station to the northeast and Nelson Elementary School to the south.
This improvement will provide a safer walking connection for Metrotown residents to access amenities in the area such as Nelson Elementary School and Royal Oak Skytrain station. Victory Street is also part of Burnaby’s bikeway system, so an RRFB at this location will help people on bicycles cross Nelson Avenue more safely and comfortably. Today the crossing is unsigned/unmarked and visibility is limited due to poor lighting in the evening. The RRFB will increase driver awareness of the crossing and improve driver compliance stopping for people using the new crosswalk.
