Musqueam Indian Band will use the Vision Zero Grant to enhance local road markings, including speed bumps, crosswalks, stop lines, slow and stop stencils, and the community’s first crosswalk. The Chief and Council have received reports of many speeding and ‘close-call’ incidents, and the project aims to improve safety for pedestrians and other active transportation users.
The Musqueam Road Marking Project will facilitate community road safety for pedestrians and motorists. The project will enhance markings and increase the visibility and safety of the roads in Musqueam Indian Reserve #2. The community's concern regarding the safety of their children playing outside is growing as speeding and close-call collisions are frequently happening. Many residents who live along these roads and close to the intersections made frequent, ongoing complaints regarding speeding and rolling stops.
Adding reflective lines at the community stop signs and STOP stencils under the stop lines will increase visibility to encourage drivers to stop completely. Reflective paint will be added to speed bumps to address speeding vehicles, and the SLOW 30km/h stencil at the entrance to the Reserve (reservations are the US) will ensure that drivers notice their speed limit and lower their speed.
In some areas, the community has limited crosswalks and little to no sidewalks, making pedestrian safety a significant concern. Marked crosswalks are one way to improve pedestrian safety, provide access to the pedestrians' crossing, and encourage drivers to watch out for pedestrians. It is critically important that drivers drive their vehicles safely and slowly.
