This project will aim to increase road safety awareness for Musqueam Indian Band youth by delivering a specialized cycling safety and mentorship program in the summer of 2023. It will be a one-time project to serve 20 Musqueam Indian band youth (aged 9-13) and 5 Musqueam Indian Band youth leaders (older teens).
Its key goals will be:
This project was inspired by the program, HUB Cycling had offered to the Katzie First Nation in the summer of 2022, using the 2022 Vision Zero Road Safety Grant. After hearing about their successes, the Musqueam Indian Band Administration contacted the HUB Cycling to deliver the same program to their community.
This program will take place early during the summer school vacation and will be condensed from eight sessions over eight weeks to twice a week for four weeks. This will allow participants to use their bikes for more of the summer and avoid the heat later in the summer. In addition, a fun team bonding session will be introduced at the program's start so that participants and instructors can get to know each other better before the program begins. Finally, we will include a basic bike maintenance session in the program so that participants can learn how to perform basic maintenance on their bikes to keep them road-worthy.
HUB Cycling has previously run this program five times, and each time has incorporated learnings and feedback from participants and partners of the previous program into the next iteration. This time learnings and feedback from participants and partners from the program with the Katzie First Nation will be incorporated.
