The project will entail monitoring high traffic volume streets with our new portable speed reader, collecting the data for three months from six previously identified high risk locations, assessing and identifying the three highest risk locations, and installing portable speed humps/signage at those identified highest risk streets. This program will be accompanied by a traffic safety education/awareness campaign through the Village media, and community special events. Our community is a walking community with a very significant population of seniors and young parents with children utilizing our very flat streets. Our residents are very concerned with the high traffic volumes and excessive speeds on our residential streets.
Residents, Village Council and the RCMP have all identified significant speeding problems within the Village - particularly on residential streets. The strength of the program is that it will clearly identify the highest risk areas, taking into account traffic volumes and average speeds. Combined with the installation of the speed humps to slow traffic down in the highest risk areas, The Village will also conduct a traffic safety education awareness campaign and create a preferred walking map of the Village to promote walking in the lower risk areas.
