This project will install interim pedestrian safety improvements until a future bridge replacement project is performed at intersection of KLO and Spiers Road. It includes a zebra crosswalk with Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) to cross a main arterial, curb extensions using modular traffic calming curbs, a parallel line crosswalk on the stop controlled crossroad, and curb adjustments for accessibility.
The KLO Rd & Spiers Rd Crosswalk Safety project is located at a T-intersection near the KLO Rd bridge in the southeast Kelowna area. This project will provide a safe connection from the Hall Rd neighbourhood to the regionally significant recreational Mission Creek Greenway and access to existing transit stops on KLO Rd. The project will install pedestrian safety improvements until a future bridge replacement project is performed. It includes a zebra crosswalk with Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) to cross KLO Rd, curb extensions using modular traffic calming curbs, a parallel line crosswalk on the stop controlled leg (Spiers Rd), and curb adjustments for accessibility. Currently, pedestrians travelling from the east can only cross the KLO Rd bridge using the walkway on the south side. Therefore, pedestrians wishing to access the Mission Creek Greenway Linear Park on the west side of the bridge have no alternative but to cross KLO Rd. The analysis leading to this project identified a need for interim crossing measures before the future bridge project (currently planned for 2025). The new crossing will increase the opportunity for all modes of travel to the relatively isolated community by providing a safer crossing of a busy, moderately high-speed arterial corridor. Connection to the existing transit network will allow greater opportunity for residents to access services and activity throughout Kelowna. Access to the existing Regional Mission Creek Greenway will help support the ability to partake in an active lifestyle and connect to destinations via bicycle.
