This is a road safety project with the primary goal of improving the existing pedestrian network within Kitimat. This project will upgrade two existing school crosswalks with Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons (RRFBs) to strengthen pedestrian detection/visibility, walkability, & safety. These crosswalks were given a high priority for RRFB upgrades because of their close proximity to educational institutions, churches, playgrounds, and bus stops. The funds will be used to cover the costs of the materials & supplies.
The most recent Active Transportation Plan prepared by McElhanney Ltd (the consultant) for the District of Kitimat identifies the need to supplement existing crosswalks with RRFB systems as a medium to enhance critical locations in the municipality’s pedestrian network, and, hence, reduce safety concerns among citizens.
The locations where the new RRFBs will be installed are:
These locations are particularly critical due to their close proximity to educational institutions and churches, and, thus, due to their high potential to be used by many school children and parishioners. Having RRFBs at these locations will create a positive impact on the community, especially on students themselves and also on the many parents/guardians that prefer to walk their children to school on a daily basis.
Note. Three separate applications were submitted for the five RRFBs and were successful to the amounts of: $19,993, $19,993, and $9,996.
