Kinnikinnick Elementary Pedestrian Controlled Crosswalk Project

Summary

Sechelt District’s Transportation Master Plan will support widening of roadways, addition of marked bike lanes and sidewalk installation. These are planned for June 2023. However, one identified need is to help route students on the East side of Reef Road across at Links Road as a safe access route to school.

The proposed design is a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) which provides a high visibility crossing to enhance both student safety and resident travel through this corridor.

Project Overview

Children are extremely exposed on this route currently. Despite SD46's efforts to draft a viable Best Routes to School transportation (BRtS) map for Kinnikinnick, this route which would service over half of the student population, shows serious infrastructure deficits. This RRFB enabled crosswalk would support both students and residents travelling in this area.

This will allow a much needed enhancement of the existing Best Routes to School Map which was Vision Zero funded in 2022-2023. With this addition, the Best Route can be profiled and highlighted in upcoming promotions for Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 to support more families participating in Active School Travel.

Another enhanced benefit is that having ONE RRFB added in a Sunshine Coast community provides a testcase in the community – highlighting the opportunity to place several more of these in key locations on the coast in collaboration with local governments and/or MOTI to increase safe active travel for multiple communities and neighborhoods. A community church and childcare centre are located at Stills Road, and this crossing would serve the church, the childcare, and residents on Links Street, the area along Reef to Marine Road and beyond. This project leverages concurrent work and enables residents and students near Kinnikinnick to travel safely on foot and bike through this space. It can also serve as a template for other communities and neighborhoods on the coast for safe infrastructure implementation.
