This project will include the installation of multi-directional Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB's) crosswalk lights that will improve pedestrian and active transportation user safety at a very busy and heavily used crosswalk in Kimberley, BC. The crosswalk that crosses Gerry Sorensen Way is a connector to at least four distinct neighbourhoods. It is the location of one of the busiest school bus stops in the community with at least 15 children accessing it in the morning and afternoon pick-up/drop-off. The crosswalk connects key portions of the City's hiking/biking trail network system and provides key connections between the popular Kimberley Alpine Resort and Kimberley Nordic Centre. Safety will be dramatically improved for users by warning motor vehicles of present pedestrians allowing them ample time to stop.
The crosswalk on Gerry Sorensen Way is one of the busiest in Kimberley. In 2020, City staff conducted traffic counts at the location which resulted in data of over 300 vehicles passing per hour at peak times. The crosswalk intersects at least four neighbourhoods and is the location of a heavily used school bus pick-up and drop-off. It provides connection to popular hiking/biking trails and connects the Peak to Platzl trail that guides pedestrians and active transportation users from the Kimberley Alpine Resort and its many visitor accommodations to Kimberley's downtown shops, restaurants and amenities. The City of Kimberley recently installed a speed bump at the crosswalk to improve pedestrian safety. However, we feel that further improvements are necessary in order to protect walkers and riders from potential motor vehicle accidents. A purpose-built solar-powered cross-walk light or Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons, will dramatically increase user visibility and allow motor vehicles ample notice of present pedestrians.
