Community Roadway Speed Reduction Initiative

Summary

The proposed project is for the purchase and deployment around the community of a trailer mounted speed sign. The goal of the project is to employ the Vision Zero ”safe systems approach” whereby the municipality will either autonomously place the mobile speed sign at targeted locations around the community or will deploy it based on speed complaints or for other noted vehicle/pedestrian/cyclist roadway safety concerns. All placements of the mobile speed trailer will only occur on roadways under municipal authority. Finally, the expectation is that a mobile speed trailer will last for 10 plus years so it’s benefit to roadway safety around the community of Golden (and therefore the benefit of receiving a Zero Vision grant) will benefit the community’s motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists for several years.

Project Overview

The municipality periodically receives requests for action to address perceived or real vehicle speeds around the community. The community would benefit from this project in that the Town would have the ability to deploy the mobile speed reader on request to municipal street locations or concern or otherwise autonomously deploy it based on employee observations of vehicle speeds. The mobile speed reader preferred to be acquired for this project has the ability to record vehicle speeds and vehicle counts and it is able to display driver feed back messaging such as ”slow down” all of which is expected to provide real-time data of vehicle operations in areas of
concern and also act as a tool to educate drivers regularly travelling specific travel routes in the community.
