Ashcroft Indian Band Safe Driving Signage

Summary

Ashcroft Indian Band will have 5 large maps of the community installed at all 5 entries of the community. These maps would have each home number, street name, street junctions and all of the vehicle entry and exit points to the community.

Previously our confusing road system the Paramedics and Police have been unable to find homes/members that have called them in crisis. In addition we have had visitors to our community drive around in an unsafe manner due to frustration on not being able to find the home they are looking for. We have children, animals and our elders quite often biking, playing or walking these roads.

One of our main goals within our community is safety. With clear marking maps at each entry the ambulance will have a clear path to those in crisis as well alleviating frustrated drivers in our community.

Project Overview

The Ashcroft Indian Band is located in a rural area. Our community roads and signage have proven to be confusing to our EMT's, RCMP, Fire Department and members of the public. This has lead to our first responders not being able to find our members homes when they are in crisis, especially when the responders are not from the area. This of course can have grave consequences.

In addition, this has lead to fast speeds, erratic driving and frustration from First responders and members of the public visiting the community.

We are a community of roughly 90 members, most of which are elders and children. These vulnerable members quite often are walking, biking, playing on or near the roads in our community. Unfortunately one of our elders was struck by a motor vehicle while walking in our community, he was treated and thankfully had minor injuries. This is not an isolated incident, there have been several times that our VRU's have experienced a near miss.

Having clear landmark signage at each of the entries to the community, along with the posted speed limit of 10km will alleviate a good portion of frustration the drivers experience. This will also support our EMT's on a quick response time for members in crisis.

Creating a safer environment for our Ashcroft Indian Band VRU's to attend our outdoor events as well as to visit/play with their neighbors is of great importance to our community.
