AIB Traffic Calming

Summary

The project will  install 13 road chokers on key high speed traffic areas within the community  to enhance traffic safety, reduce vehicle speeds and create a pedestrian  friendly community. Installing road chokers will narrow the roadway. In addition, visible signage stating ”SLOW CHILDREN AT PLAY”, ”ROAD NARROWING” and ”CAUTION SLOW DOWN PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC” will be installed throughout the community.

Project Overview

Ashcroft Indian Band is a rural community that faces issues with speeding vehicles and near misses involving pedestrians. We have high pedestrian activity, with residents walking or biking to our Health Centre, Sports Plex, Campground, Playgrounds, Community Hall, Community garden and Band office.

In our small remote community, managing traffic flow is essential to avoid dangerous driving behaviors. Traffic chokers help guide vehicles and reduce the risk of accidents, creating a safer environment for our more vulnerable road users. Traffic chokers will act as a physical barrier that will protect areas important to our community, such as the Sports Plex, Playgrounds, Health Centre, Band Hall, Community Garden and Band Office by discouraging high-speed driving near these areas. With the addition of slow traffic signage it will create more visual awareness to drivers to slow down and encourage drivers to be more cautious, protecting community members who walk along or near the roadway.
