2024 Jingle Pot Road Traffic Calming

Summary

This project will establish traffic calming elements on a Jingle Pot Road intersection regularly used by school children. The goal is to slow vehicle speeds while improving visibility on this road. The intersection crossing will also be shortened to improve safety for pedestrians attending the Nanaimo Christian School and nearby church.

Project Overview

The Nanaimo Christian School has 725 students enrolled in preschool and K-12, who are not limited to a specific catchment area, necessitating that many families drive. As such, there is a high volume of vehicles who all need to access the school at the same time, causing Holland Road north of Jingle pot to become congested at peak pick up and drop off times.

Many parents choose to drop off/pick up using the surrounding road network to avoid the vehicle congestion surrounding the school, including on Holland Road south of Jingle Pot. While Holland Road south of Jingle Pot is less busy, the problem is that children are forced to cross Jingle Pot Road, which is known location for speed issues.

The road was established in 1968 and has many characteristics, including being long and relatively wide, that help drivers feel comfortable traveling at speeds higher than the posted limits. The area was developed with a rural mobility system, and has a mix of paved and gravel shoulders without sidewalks.

To improve safety for children going to school, this project will install various traffic calming elements to reduce speeds along the Jingle Pot Road.
